TalkTalk aims for 180,000 new customers after cutting Carphone connection
TalkTalk hopes to add as many as 180,000 new customers this year after its demerger from Carphone Warehouse.
The internet provider’s customer additions gained momentum last year after its acquisition of its struggling rival Tiscali. It ended the year with 4.2 million customers, adding 42,000 net new users in the final three months of the year, an increase of on the previous quarter.
The company actually added 144,000 new TalkTalk broadband customers during the period but the growth was checked by the loss of more than 100,000 former AOL and Tiscali customers.
Charles Dunstone, chairman ofTalkTalk, said: In terms of net additions to the TalkTalk brand we’re the fastest-growing ISP in the market. TalkTalk is absolutely flying.”
He said he was confident that despite the losses that the company inherited, the integration of Tiscali meant that its churn — the rate at which customers defect to other providers — would return to normal levels this year and he expected to add between 140,000 and 180,000 new customers.
The internet provider, which appointed the former Sainsbury’s executive Dido Harding as its chief executive this year, expects to increase revenue by up to 8 per cent this year, higher than expectations.
We are confident of that revenue growth. This is a growing business and we plan to keep growing,” Mr Dunstone said.
Analysts described the new revenue target as punchy”. TechMarketView said that the continued strong performance of TalkTalk and Virgin Media showed that the UK consumer is alive and well, particularly when it comes to spending money on communications”.
TalkTalk’s revenue increased 22 per cent to £1.7 billion in the year to the end of March.
